The Legend of Angus Phillips

15 12 2009

Here’s a tale that must be told of a legendary man
Who walked into a world he didn’t understand
Forever his life changed and always for the best
Then wrote it in the paper and shared it with the rest

It was 35 years ago when he started to print the words
He couldn’t name a single fish and thought Donald Duck was a bird
Just a babe out in the woods, exploring God’s own land
And giving a new meaning to the term Outdoor Sportsman

Angus Phillips is the Outdoor Sportsman pal
From fishing, hunting or sailing, he always showed us how
He taught us skills we never knew and helped us all the time
Cause you knew he tried the things he wrote in his byline

He showed us Mother Nature and her little tricks
With his friends by his side to give him sportsman tips
When you need to hunt some quail, be as quiet as a mouse
And the best place to catch fish is at Fletcher’s Boathouse

Every time he took us, to a place we yearned to go
And in a couple of columns, he had the ability to show
I thank you from all your fans you took to the Outdoor Wonderland
And raise a glass to Angus Phillips, The Washington Post Sportsman

Angus Phillips is the Outdoor Sportsman pal
From fishing, hunting or sailing, he always showed you how
He taught us skills we never knew and helped us all the time
Cause you knew he tried all the things he wrote in his byline
