On this date in 1949, RCA announces its newest creation, the seven-inch vinyl record to be played at 45 rpm. The “45,” as it would soon be known, would become the driving force of the record business in the early days of rock and roll. On the same day Columbia introduced the 33⅓ . Needless to say, the teenage girls liked the LP better because of it’s 12 inch size.
